From Saturday, 1 October 2011 to Sunday, 8 January 2012, a guided route is being offered to get to know Enric Sagnier´s architecture. This is the architect with the largest number of buildings in Barcelona. This itinerary, which coincides with the exhibition that CaixaForum is holding on the architect, aims to reveal the different archaeological styles of this prolific artist by visiting buildings such as the Arnús Bank, the Miquel Fargas House, the Church of Pompeii, or a single-family home situated on the Avinguda Diagonal.

The Centre Pompidou presents "Edvard Munch, l'oeil moderne" [Edvard Munch, the modern eye], a collection never-seen-before in France of around eighty paintings, thirty artworks done on paper, fifty photographs and a film. Showing the work of the famous Norwegian painter (1853-1944) in a different light, this exhibition shows how much the artist's curiosity for all of the forms of representation of his era fuelled his inspiration and his work. His experience of photography, cinema, his readings of the illustrated press and even his work for the theatre profoundly influenced his work, the brilliant modernity of which the exhibition reveals.

The Belvedere owns the world´s largest collection of paintings by Gustav Klimt. In autumn 2011, it will present this world-famous artist together with the congenial architect and designer Josef Hoffmann. Their intense collaboration, such in the Beethoven Exhibition at the Vienna Secession (1902) and the Stoclet Palace in Brussels (1905-12), set new standards in Europe when it comes to the concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk. Numerous works, such as Klimt´s Portrait of Fritza Riedler, which clearly reflects Hoffmann´s characteristic hand, attest to the two pioneers´ mutual influence, which in this comprehensive exhibition is also explored with regard to their involvement in the Wiener Werkstätte.

Viena
www.khm.at/en/exhibitions/current-exhibitions/gustav-klimt-in-the-kunsthistorisches-museum/
Organised by Kunsthistorisches Museum
Curated by Dr. Otmar Rychlik
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birthday of Gustav Klimt on July 14, 2012, the Kunsthistorisches Museum will showcase its important wall paintings designed and executed by the celebrated painter and draughtsman.
In 1890, a year before the formal opening of the newly- erected Court Museum housing the Imperial art collections, Gustav Klimt, his younger brother, Ernst, and a friend and colleague, Franz Matsch, were commissioned to execute the series of paintings depicting important periods of European art, among them Ancient Egyptian as well as Ancient Greek and Roman art. This magnificent series is still displayed between the columns and above the arcades in the Main Staircase, about 12 m above the Entrance Hall.
A specially-built bridge spanning the width of the Main Staircase will offer visitors a close-up view of Klimt´s paintings on the north wall.
In addition, a temporary show in the Special Exhibition Gallery will present the evolution of the series, a seminal work in Klimt´s oeuvre around 1900. It will focus on Gustav Klimt´s "Ringstrassenperiode". Paintings and graphic works from the holdings of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, augmented by loans from public collections in Switzerland and Germany as well as from private collectors, will showcase Klimt´s oeuvre from his paintings for the Burgtheater to those commissioned for the Kunsthistorisches Museum to Klimt´s "golden period".

Exhibition: A Collage Before Collage
From 06.03.2012 to 03.06.2012
Barcelona
www.museupicasso.bcn.cat/
Organised by Museu Picasso
Pablo Picasso invented collage as an artistic technique around the spring of 1912. But long before this, in Barcelona in March 1899, he made a drawing in which he glued a technically reproduced image: the portrait of an actress. We now know that this piece is a picture card from a matchbox, which were very popular in the late nineteenth century.
From the peculiarity of the work, this small exhibition explores the new visuality of this period in which drawings and photographs vied for position in the popular illustrated papers and magazines, the boom in the mass production of printed images, which inundated everyday life, and the vogue for collecting them that seized a large part of the population.

Exhibition: Gustav Klimt. The Drawings
From 14.03.2012 to 10.06.2012
Albertina Museum, Vienna
www.albertina.at/en/exhibitions/current
Organised by Albertina Museum
The great popularity of the illustrator Gustav Klimt is primarily based on the intoxicating sensuality of his female studies from the nude. The exhibition Gustav Klimt - The Drawings memorably visualises just how complex his draughtsmanship really is. The Albertina is showing a large part of its famous Klimt holdings, which consist of 170 sheets. The show is supplemented by outstanding loans from Austrian and international collections. The exhibition features a rich spectrum of figure studies, monumental work drawings and pictorial allegories. Klimt created fascinating effects with economical technical means: with chalk, pencil or coloured pencils, occasionally with a pen or watercolours and gold paint. Several series of figure studies are found in the Albertina that were created by Klimt in connection with important allegorical paintings or portraits. In these sheets he got to the essence of a certain pose, movement or frame of mind step by step. Each sheet has an autonomous significance.
Particularly these rarely shown series convey deep insight into the work methods and the mental and emotional universe of an artist who practically never spoke about his art.
Exhibition: The tunnels of the Historical Conclave of the Hospital de Sant Pau host a photo exhibition
From 24.09.2011 to 30.06.2012
Recinte Històric Hospital Sant Pau, Barcelona
www.santpau.es
Organised by Recinte Històric de Sant Pau
The Historical Conclave of the Hospital de Sant Pau is hosting a new exhibition covering some of the most important historical moments of the construction of the Modernista complex. It also focuses on the restoration project which is currently underway. You can visit the exhibition by following the guided routes of "Sant Pau en obres" (Saint Paul Under Construction) which are offered every morning from Monday to Sunday.
The collection of snapshots comprise a selection of historical photographs and diverse reproductions of the original plans which Domènech i Montaner drew up by hand in the early 20th century. In this way, visitors can get an idea of the vast number of studies and trials the architect produced when designing the buildings in the Conclave while appreciating the ornamental elements that have made Sant Pau a world reference in Modernisme.
These photos illustrate the evolution the Conclave has undergone over the years and how the city´s physiognomy has also changed, especially the neighbourhoods of Guinardó and Sagrada Família.
The last part of the exhibition centres on the evolution of the renovation project. Among other aspects, it shows the changes that two of the pavilions have experienced, those that have now been fully renovated: Santa Apol·lònia (St Apollonia) and Sant Jordi (St George). You can also get a close-up view of life-size reproductions of Sant Pau´s most significant decorative elements: rosettes, dosserets, pinnacles and glazed-tile roofs. Furthermore, several information panels explain the laborious tasks being undertaken by artisans at work on Sant Pau to restore all these stone and pottery pieces, along with the windows and mosaics.
The Sant Pau International Project
The renovation work enables the recovery of Sant Pau´s heritage and artistic value. It opens the site to the city, preparing it to become a knowledge centre of reference worldwide, where diverse international, national and local institutions can work jointly to provide an answer to the challenges of the 20th century. Education, health and sustainability will be the main spheres of action, with a geographic space as its preferential area of reference: the Mediterranean.
The project to rehabilitate the Historical Conclave of Sant Pau has a budget of 105 million euros, financed mainly by contributions from the Operating Programme of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for Catalonia 2007-2013, the Spanish government, the Government of Catalonia, local administrations and the Fundació Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau.
Extension of the guided visit routes
The photo exhibition forms part of the "Sant Pau en obres" guided visits, included in the Barcelona Modernisme Route which the Institut del Paisatge Urbà (Urban Landscape Institute) at the Barcelona City Council is organising.
These guided visits start at the Sant Jordi Pavilion, which is now fully restored. Since late July, visitors have also been able to stroll through one section of the kilometre of tunnels where the new exhibition is installed.
Thanks to the opening of this new tourist route, visitors also take a short stroll down the Conclave´s central avenue, where they can check on the progress of the renovation work on the Central Pavilion (former operating theatres) and the Administration Pavilion, the most important building in Domènech i Montaner´s architectural conclave.
The guided visit finalises with a look at the Conclave church, the Portal de Santa Marta, the exterior of the Convent and the Sant Rafael Pavilion, in which visitors can appreciate its original interior space.

This retrospective is the first fully dedicated to the drawings of Gustav Klimt (1862-1918), one of the seminal figures in modern art. It explores the stylistic evolution of his drawings as well as their centrality to his artistic enterprise. Indeed, Klimt's paintings cannot be understood without careful consideration of his drawings, which also play a semi-autonomous role in his artistic output. Based upon assiduous study of the human figure, they are characterized by an unsurpassed mastery of line during all phases of his artistic development. This major loan exhibition was organized by the Albertina Museum, Vienna, in association with the J. Paul Getty Museum, to mark the 150th anniversary of Klimt's birth.

Since the introduction of photography in 1839, portraiture has been one of the most widely practiced forms of the medium. Starting in the early 20th century, however, some photographers began to question whether a single image could adequately capture the complexity of an individual. Arranged both chronologically and thematically, the exhibition features 153 works by 20 artists who photographed the same subjects--primarily friends, family, and themselves-over the course of days, months, or years to create some of the most provocative and revealing portraits of the past 100 years.
The exhibition is made possible through the generous support of the Trellis Fund
Exhibition: Antoni Samarra, 100 años después
From 13.09.2012 to 05.01.2013
Casa Museu Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Canet de Mar

Previous exhibitions on the theme of nudity have mostly been limited to female nudes. With the presentation "naked men" in the autumn of 2012 the Leopold Museum will be showing a long overdue exhibition on the diverse and changing depictions of naked men from 1800 to the present.
Thanks to loans from all over Europe, the exhibition "naked men" will offer an unprecedented overview of the depiction of male nudes. Starting with the period of Enlightenment in the 18th century, the presentation will focus mainly on the time around 1800, on tendencies of Salon Art, as well as on art around 1900 and after 1945. At the same time, the exhibition will also feature important reference works from ancient Egypt, examples of Greek vase painting and works from the Renaissance. Spanning two centuries, the presentation will show different artistic approaches to the subject, competing ideas of the ideal male model as well as changes in the concept of beauty, body image and values.
