Strand 1. Breaking the Art Nouveau Glass Ceiling: The Women of Art Nouveau
Historiography has condemned women artists of the Art Nouveau style to a double oblivion: once for being artists of Art Nouveau, a style that was not valued for decades, and once again for being women. And, if it is true that society in the Art Nouveau period was strongly gender-biased, not offering an equal environment in which women could succeed in the traditionally “male” sphere of the fine arts, it is no less true that our society today does not share such views and that research and communication in twenty-first-century History of Art has a certain duty to compensate this.

Art Nouveau artists explored the representation of femininity to an extent that had not occurred before in the history of art. From the stretching of the limits of erotic aesthetics to the creation of fantastic metamorphic feminine creatures, the interpretation of the female condition was central to expressions of the diverse Art Nouveau movements across Europe.

The growing popularity of Art Nouveau in the last decades has made it possible for both specialists and, to a certain extent, the general public, to discover previously little-known Art Nouveau heritage in cities and regions across Europe and the world. But the true extent of the Art Nouveau creative explosion of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries still has to be fully assessed, and new discoveries are seeing the light periodically.
