The son of the cabinet maker Francesc Vidal, he began his training with him while working as a draughtsman for G. Homar. In 1899 he went to London, where he learned the cloisonné glass technique in the workshop of Barthles and Pfister, though he did not generally use this technique on his own pieces. While still working in his father´s workshop, he also made stained-glass windows, street lamps and folding screens for Bertrand Serra (Paravent dels nenúfars [Water-lillies Screen], 1899-1904; MNAC collection) using the cloisonné technique.

Following a period in South America without making anything, he returned to Barcelona to run his father´s workshop.
